Condition guide
What the grade means
Every book is graded on the standard bookseller's scale, from New to Poor, and every listing adds notes on the particular copy. The grade says where a book sits. The notes say what is wrong with it.
The scale
Six grades, from best to worst.
Condition notes
The grade is half the description.
What do the notes cover?
Everything specific to the copy that the grade does not say: a previous owner's name or inscription, foxing and toning, creases, spine lean, marks in the text, jacket wear, ex-library stamps. If it would change your mind about buying, it is in the notes.
How is each book graded?
From the copy in hand. Cover, spine and edges are assessed first. The interior is then checked by hand before the book is listed.
Are the photos of the actual book?
Yes. The photos show the copy you will receive, front and back, with further views where the book needs them. Read them alongside the notes.
If it isn't as described
We'll put it right.
What if a book doesn't match its listing?
If a book arrives damaged or isn't as described, we'll put it right with a full refund. We don't offer change-of-mind returns, so read the grade and the notes before you buy. The full policy is on Shipping & Returns.
Can I ask about a copy before I buy?
Yes. Contact us with the title and what you want to know about the copy.
