Welcome to the Journal: a tour of our shelves
Welcome to the Inter Books Journal. This is where we write about the books that pass through our hands: the ones we couldn't put down, the ones with a story in the margins, and the ones we think deserve another reader.
Everything in the shop and here on the Journal is sorted onto nine shelves. Here's what lives on each, so you can wander straight to the corner that calls you.
Occult & Esoteric. The hidden traditions. Tarot and divination, astrology and the I Ching, alchemy and magic, Kabbalah, Gnosticism and Theosophy, and the living paths of Wicca and Paganism. If it was once whispered rather than preached, it probably lives here.
Spirituality & Mysticism. Books for the inner journey. Mystics and seekers, Sufi poetry and teaching, Kundalini and mantra, prayer, daily meditations and Gurdjieff's Fourth Way. Quiet books, mostly, the kind people keep by the bed.
Religion & Traditions. The great faiths, their scriptures, history and ideas: Christianity, Islam and Buddhism, Swedenborg, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and wider studies of religion. For readers who want to understand a tradition from the inside, or see how traditions speak to each other.
Eastern Philosophy. Advaita and Vedanta, yoga philosophy, Zen, Taoism, Tibetan teachings and Tantra, alongside practical guides to meditation and chi. Some are classic translations; others are well-thumbed handbooks from the teachers who brought these ideas west.
Psychology & Consciousness. Where the mind looks at itself. Jung and depth psychology, philosophy, dreams and consciousness, and the stranger edges too: ESP, psychic research and psychedelic writing.
Healing & Nature. Herbalism, Ayurveda, homeopathy and holistic health, and the old knowledge of plants and the body. Many of these are practical books, written by people who grew, gathered and made things themselves.
Myth & Culture. The stories people have told for as long as there have been people. Mythology and folklore, Celtic lore, ancient Egypt and the Maya, First Nations and Native American traditions, and shamanism around the world.
Conspiracy & Mystery. For the questions that won't sit still. Unexplained phenomena, lost civilisations, secret societies and hidden histories: books that ask what the official story left out. Best read with an open mind and one raised eyebrow.
Literature & Other. Poetry, novels, biography, and the wonderful books that refuse to fit anywhere else. Some of our favourite finds end up on this shelf.
Each post on the Journal is filed under one of these shelves, so you can follow the ones you love. When we write about a book that's in stock, you'll find a link straight to it. Most of our books are single copies, so when one's gone, it's often gone for good.
New arrivals go up most days. If you're hunting for something in particular, or have books of your own to pass on, we'd love to hear from you. Happy reading.
